The Play for Peace and Moving Wall gallery is now online at hilarylindler.com.  You can also visit directly by clicking here.  The gallery is image heavy so please be patient while the photographs load.  In a couple of weeks the gallery will be paired down and integrated into hilarylindler.com's gallery page.

At the request of the Play for Peace coordinator, images from the October 16-17 have been made available for purchase.  All the images in the gallery are available, along with a good number of photographs from the event that are not on my website.  To purchase please visit digibug.com/hilarylindler.

Photographs will be printed by Digibug Pro's five-star professional photo lab using Fuji chemicals and paper.  If you live locally, do not have a credit card, and would like to make a purchase please e-mail me.  I will be happy to make other arrangements for you.

projects: play for peace images in post-processing

I'm in the middle of editing photographs from the Play for Peace event last weekend and am very excited about some of the images.  The top photo in this post is probably one of my favorites from the whole event.  Post-processing should be finished by the end of this week, and if all goes well a gallery of images should be posted on hilarylindler.com come this weekend.

The lovely Tracy recently opened up a shop, Coin To A Cat, on etsy and offers both realistic and cartoon style portraits of your pets.  I am particularly in love with her pet cartoons and suggest that you check out her shop ASAP.  While you are at it, visit her deviantART gallery and see how Tracy's art really shines.

The two images above are from her Custom 8.5 x 11 in. Pet Caricature and CUSTOM 11x14in. Pet Caricature listings.

projects: moving vietnam wall and play for peace completion

The Moving Wall/Play for Peace event this weekend was fabulous! A much larger crowd than anyone expected showed up for the veterans’ memorial event. I have plenty of pictures to share once they have been sifted through (an estimated 1200+ ) but won't get around to posting them for another week. In the meantime, enjoy the picture above. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to these lovely men from the North Carolina Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association who let me stand under their helicopter when it started to rain. That shelter allowed me to continue shooting the event from a good vantage point without having to worry about my camera being ruined by water. They also proved to be wonderful conversationalists and all around gentlemen.

You can visit their organization's website and make donations to support their educational efforts here: http://ncvhpa.org/

projects: moving vietnam wall and play for peace Oct 16-17

I am proud to announce that I am donating photography services to Play for Peace both today (October 16) and tomorrow.  This year, Play for Peace coincides with the arrival of the Moving Wall - a half size replica of the Washington DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial - in Dillsboro, North Carolina.  In addition, all day today students of Western Carolina University were interviewing and videotaping Vietnam and WWII veterans as part of the "Veterans Experiences Documentary Project."

If you are in the area tomorrow Oct 17, come help celebrate Play for Peace 2009:

• Live music all day and into the night
• Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall in Dillsboro, NC
• Family Picnic at Bridge Park in Sylva
• Military dining discount options
• T-shirts for sale: proceeds to support troops suffering from PTSD

There is also a small Civil War encampment that is "inhabited" by veterans.

From their website:

Play For Peace was created by Eli Hashemi, who began it two years ago as a way to unite people in Western North Carolina to speak openly about the war and to support our troops and their families as they deal with the inevitable ramifications of war. The program has expanded and now Play For Peace's goal is to raise awareness and funds for War Veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Admission to the event in the park and the late night venues will be donations for the Jackson County Community Table which feeds many local vets and their families, as well as the rest of Jackson County daily.

You can find out more about the event at www.play4peace.com

I hope to see you there!

etsy: i'm featured in a treasury!

Thanks to etsy artist ettarose, my piece "42" has been included in a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy themed treasury entitled So Long, Thanks for All the Fish (DON'T PANIC).  Hurry and stop by because this collection will expire Saturday 29 August 2009 at 10:19amEST.   My favorite piece in the treasury (besides mine of course) is a pair of earring studs made from typewriter keys. Adorable!

projects: the great table venture part 7 *image heavy*

The great days has finally arrived. I grew sick of waiting for weather to cooperate and decided to get as much done as possible before the day's surprise rain shower appeared (unexpected thunderstorm is unexpected!) While it might not look like much, what you see below is the fruit of about 2 hours of labor. Quite unlike anything else I've ever done before, this tabletop has proved to be much like a puzzle box of odd pieces that don't go together. Imagine walking into the store and purchasing an amazing puzzle. Once how, you excitedly open the box, all ready to begin, only to discover that your box contains hundreds of corner pieces and only a few middle ones. That is a bit like what this project has turned out to be. I have multiple containers full of materials, but they are all irregular shapes that do not want to play with each other. It is fun to figure out, but lots and lots of work. Enjoy the pictures and look for some more images later this week. A few key discoveries have been made about my materials, but this is not really the place to tell that information. Soon ... soon.

Sketching the grid lines.  It hasn't been used much since I was gifted it back in'02, but the T-Square sure came in handy this afternoon!  Ignore the cheesy hearts/love pencil.  That's one of those mysterious supplies that's almost never used, yet still finds a way to follow you through multiple moves and grade levels.  I think this one is from elementary school.

Starting to lay the tile. The hardest part about this step was simply getting started! Eventually I fell into a routine where roughly 1.5" would get pieced together. That section would be carefully slid to the side while glue was applied. Once the glue was tacky, the tile would be laid down and adhesive remover used to remove remnants of glue from the tops of tiles (from my fingers). Remember all that off-white tile a freecycler gave me AGES ago? The sheer quantity of that tile is going to come in handy as it is perfect for the "borders." The squares that result will be filled in with misc colored tile. Each square is roughly 5"x5". The real challenge , when beginning, was realizing that it would be impossible to stay 100% inside the grid lines without perfectly cut pieces. Therefore, the gaps that you see around the edges will eventually (hopefully) be filled by other tile when I start filling in the squares. The gaps that exist within the border itself will eventually be filled in with mortar. The greatest concerns at this moment is to fill in all possible spaces as much as possible with what I have, and making sure that it is as level as possible.

Finishing up for the day.  See?  After about 2 hours there isn't much to write home about, but at least it is started.  Thanks to rain (unexpected thunderstorm is unexpected!) I was forced to quit earlier than planned; but I'm glad to have finally broken past the "blank canvas" stage of the creation process.  It is easier to envision what the final product will look like, and I've only got another 8+hours left of border tiling.  I'm actually very pleased with how it looks so far and hope to get some more done later this week before Graduate work kicks into full gear.  If all goes well the tiling supplies will be officially out of the house before cold weather hits.  What a light-hearted thought that is!

As a complete side note, don't  forget to watch Project Runway on Thursdays (10pm, Lifetime).  If you don't have cable you can watch the full episodes for free on Lifetime's website the Saturday after they air.  Join me in rooting for Etsyian Louise Black.
